Photographs, letters and diaries can tell a history that a headline cannot. The Palestinian Museum’s online platforms bring those materials into reach of readers far beyond its physical building. As checked on 3 October, its website listed 343,485 digitised items across 416 collections in the Palestinian Museum Digital Archive, covering more than 200 years of Palestinian life. The museum’s platform directory is the source of those figures; archive totals can change.

History with an everyday scale

The collection is presented as a record of life through photographs, documents, publications and audio and video recordings. For a reader, that creates a different entry point into Palestinian history: a personal letter, a family image or a recorded voice, rather than only a summary of political events.

A useful way to explore is to start with one place, person or period, then follow the collection information. Context matters. A digitised object is a source to examine, not an invitation to assume that one family’s experience represents everyone’s.

A museum visit from anywhere

The museum’s Museum from Home section also brings together virtual exhibitions, podcasts, videos and publications. Its Sanasel educational platform offers games and stories inspired by the museum’s exhibitions and collections, while the linked interactive encyclopedia provides another route into historical events and primary documents.

These are established resources, not a new launch announced this week. Their relevance is continuing access: teachers, families and people in the diaspora can discover material without making a physical visit.

Keeping the record meaningful

Digitisation can widen access, but it does not remove the importance of preserving original objects, documenting where they came from or respecting image rights. Readers should check the conditions attached to individual items before republishing them.

Supporting Palestinian culture includes making room for its ordinary life, artistic work and historical complexity. This initiative gives that work a visible place online, and gives curious readers a practical way to begin.
