WHO has validated Timor-Leste as having eliminated trachoma as a public health problem. Its 3 September announcement also marks a regional milestone: Timor-Leste was the last country in WHO’s South-East Asia Region where endemic trachoma was suspected. The validation followed years of investigation and evidence gathering.

What the milestone means

WHO reported that a 2025 survey analysed 4,949 samples from children aged one to five across all 13 municipalities. Testing found no evidence of transmission at a level requiring a trachoma-specific public health intervention. Earlier investigations between 2015 and 2017 also found no trachoma.

Elimination as a public health problem is a specific health-system milestone. It does not mean the disease has been eradicated worldwide or that eye-care services are no longer needed. WHO says the country will retain the ability to identify and manage individual cases through its eye-care system.

Progress that continues after recognition

WHO’s trachoma factsheet describes an infectious cause of blindness and the continuing importance of surveillance after elimination thresholds are met. The milestone therefore combines recognition of progress with responsibility for sustaining it.

For WDWK, the encouraging part is the role of patient, verifiable work. A survey, a clinic assessment and a functioning reporting system are less visible than an announcement, but they make that announcement credible. Positive health news is strongest when it explains both the achievement and the remaining task. Here, the achievement is validated progress; the ongoing task is maintaining detection and care.
